Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea is cause by the closing of the upper airway while asleep. The uvula and soft pallet collapses on the back wall of the upper airway. Then the tongue falls backward, collapsing on the back wall of the upper airway, the uvula and soft pallet forming a tight blockage, preventing any air from entering the lungs. In order to breathe the person must arouse or awaken, causing tension in the tongue thereby opening the airway, allowing air to pass into the lungs.
Most prominent symptoms are:
- snoring
- not breathing while asleep
- excessive daytime sleepiness
- obesity
- excessive soft palate tissue and
- large tongue
Other symptoms include
- lack of concentration,
- forgetfulness,
- uncharacteristically irritable,
- anxiety,
- depression,
- mood and/or behavioral changes,
- morning headaches,
- disorientation at awakening and
- loss of sexual interest.
Treatments
There are many treatments for sleep apnea, often several treatments are tried before the one "that fits" is found. options include:
- Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). A mask is worn over the nose and is connected to a CPAP unit. The CPAP flow generators develop a constant, controllable pressure to keep your upper airway open so that you can breath normally.
- A broad variety of non surgical Dental applications
- Surgery of the tongue
- Surgery of the upper palate near the uvula to remove excess tissue.
- Surgery to correct a deviated septum.
- Moving the Jaw forward
- Pulling the tongue forward (when it is to large) and
- Snoring treatments
